For the first time ever, ALPS is providing an glimpse into the original diaries and films of legendary mountaineer Erhard Loretan. Visitors can (almost) physically experience the preparation and feats of strength undertaken on the mountain, while also learning about the opportunities and limits of what people are prepared to commit to.
The Freiburg alpinist Erhard Loretan (1959–2011) pushed boundaries and achieved what seemed impossible. He was the first Swiss climber to ascend all 14 eight-thousanders in the world. With minimal equipment and a high tempo, he tackled demanding routes in the Alps and the Himalayas. In doing so, he set new standards in mountaineering and influenced subsequent generations. Following his passing, the Loretan family gifted his estate to ALPS.
"At the Limit" allows us to experience the physical and mental challenges of mountain climbing and explores the limits and possibilities of our own endurance. The exhibition provides a first-time glimpse into the exceptional mountaineer's original diaries and film recordings. They demonstrate that success depends not only on extensive experience but also on great perseverance and the willingness to turn back when necessary. Join Loretan on an expedition and explore his most significant climbs at the interactive station.
