History
In Bern, the idea of a Museum Quarter has been under discussion for several decades.
In 2019, a study commissioned by the canton, city and community of burghers (Burgergemeinde) of Bern analysed the feasibility of such a project in terms of content, organisation and urban development. This vision of a Museum Quarter was further developed in collaboration with the various cultural institutions (each retaining its autonomy), and the association Bern Museum Quarter was established in June 2021.
During a four-year development phase (2021–2024), the essential groundwork was laid. In a number of areas, with the involvement of the staff concerned, the eleven participating cultural and educational institutions moved closer together, joint procedures and projects were developed, and an umbrella brand was created, thus laying the foundations for a collaborative and attractive Museum Quarter. On this basis, the implementation phase was launched in 2025.
Alongside the thematic cooperation, Bern Museum Quarter is being developed as an urban space and cultural cluster in collaboration with the canton, city and Burgergemeinde of Bern.
